Daniel Day-Lewis' Irish estate, Castlekevin, is located about 35 miles south of Dublin near the village of Annamoe in the hills of County Wicklow. A five-bedroom Georgian house, that had at one time belonged to relatives of the great Irish playwright, John Millington Synge, who stayed there frequently, Castlekevin was up for sale in the fall of 1993 when Daniel purchased it for a reported sum of £500,000. In 1996, he purchased a further 45-acre field to the west of the estate. The house is reputed (in the French tabloids anyway) to be haunted by the ghost of a lawyer who committed suicide on the estate. Finding Castlekevin
Annamoe is a small village whose center consists of a tea room, an antique shop and a grocery store. Near the bridge (marked Annamoe Br.) on the Annamoe River is a trout farm. North of Annamoe on R755 in the village of Roundwood are some pubs and small restaurants where Daniel can possibly be spotted from time to time. Just to the east of Annamoe along R763 trace the unmarked yellow road that branches south. Off this road, there are three grayish-white roads that lead to Castlekevin. | |||||
The first is a main road and is shared by other residents as well as Daniel, so anybody can drive it or walk along it. The second, which cuts off of the yellow road just as it makes a southeasterly turn toward Moneystown is the private entrace. Castlekevin Lodge (see below) which does not belong to Daniel is at the intersection of this road. Daniel's house, is marked Castlekevin on the map. The entire area is hilly with no extensive flat areas. The house itself is situated very near the highest point and undoubtedly has a magnificent view of the hills with the ocean in the distance.
House Vicinity
Since this is a drawing facing the front of the house (the red door side) South is at the top. Note the area to the east (left) of the house marked "Arena" -- Daniel constructed a horse arena here shortly after moving in. The arena is completely shut off from view of the road by a stone wall. Also note the road to Castlekevin Lodge. This property was offered for sale in the spring/summer of 1999. It did not sell and presumably continues to be the property of whoever owned it then. It is about a 5-10 minute walk from Castlekevin Lodge to Castlekevin. The 45-Acre PurchaseIn the fall of 1996 a 45-acre plot of land to the west of Castlekevin consisting of fields, a wooded area, a pond, and a derelict 3-room stone cottage was offered for sale. Click on the icons below to see the original sale announcement(left) and accompanying picture(right).
Daniel purchased the 45 acres -- possibly because it came with a right-of-way through his estate and he wanted the privacy. He reportedly paid £220,000 for it. It is not known if he has made any changes to the property. The map below is a scaled-down drawing of the land registry map of the property. I have put South at the top so you can see where it attaches to Daniel's original estate. You can also see the location of the pond and derelict cottage. The "high" side of the property is to the south side. Pictures of this property are on Castlekevin Pictures 2. A word of caution -- it is a footpath only and quite rough in places, so don't attempt to drive it. There is no good way to locate the path from the western side -- only from the eastern side through Castlekevin itself. The path takes about 30-40 minutes to walk.
