Daniel's stage career began while he was still at Bedales where he appeared in

In the summer of 1973, Daniel attended the National Youth Theatre program. One production he acted in was The Children's Crusade.
It is not known what other plays he was in, but the productions that summer included:
Richard IIRomeo and Juliet,   Geordie's March,  and The Petticoat Rebellion.

He graduated from Bedales in 1975 and went on to the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School ( below left).
While there completing his training, he appeared at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre Royal (below right) in productions of:
